on commitment

From Fearless Creating by Eric Maisel:
The sculptor August Rodin explained, “All master artists reach the private enclosure of the Unknowable. Some of them lamentably bruise their foreheads there. Others, who have a more optimistic imagination, think they hear from behind the wall the songs of melodious birds, who populate the secret orchard.” The uncommitted artist bruises her own heart by not committing, while the committed artist, afraid like anyone else of not succeeding, afraid of not knowing enough, afraid of not doing well enough, still determines to listen to the songbirds and to record their songs.
