I had to look that up, too, but then realized that I do that without knowing what it was called. (Schooled in my own techniques!)

I also stumbled over, “work in fairly big quanta of time.” (Like the Australian airline?)

And then, later, in the same essay, he writes “use simple, germanic words.”

I loved this piece, but I have one tiny complaint: his use of the word ‘anaphora.’

Maybe I’d an uneducated dolt, but I had to look it up. Seems like if you’re trying to drive home the notion that good writing facilitates communication, you need to write in language that most people will understand.

On the other hand, he also wrote: “Writing doesn’t just communicate ideas; it generates them.”

And his use of anaphora inspired me to look it up, think about how I use the technique sometimes, talk to my co-workers about it and good writing… so maybe I’ve been schooled TWICE.

Thanks for sharing the link to this article. The timing is perfect because (1) I’ve yet to finish the article I owe the Big Scary Magazine and (2) it reminded me of Tina’s advice to do a “shitty first draft” and thinking of Tina is always nice.
